Father Patrick Verdiue and Dr. Katsvairo to Establish Grass Nurseries in Carcasse, Haiti

Dr. Tawainga Katsvairo recently met with Father Patrick Verdiue, the priest for St. Joseph Church in Carcasse, Haiti to plan an expansion of the Haiti Grass Project to the Southern part of Haiti.

This expansion is a collaboration between the Better Universe and Citizens, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, MD, Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Barnesville, MD, and the Rotary Club of McLean. Jack Reid, the US coordinator with St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Barnesville, explained that St. Joseph Church has worked with the two aforementioned US churches since 2010. A grant from the Rotary Club of McLean and individual donors funds the project in Carcasse.

Two nurseries will be established, one at the school and another within the community. The grass will be transplanted from the nurseries to the mountains in 2024. This project also has an education component, where students at St Joseph will have a curriculum on environmental conservation. Father Verdiue stated that locals are excited about the upcoming project.

The Haiti Grass Project has ambitious goals to form collaborations with as many partners as possible toward planting grass across Haiti.
