Rotary Club of Columbia Town to Establish Grass and Tree Nurseries and Pollinator Gardens in Haiti.

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Rotary Club of Columbia Town Center on the Haiti Grass Project.  The Rotary Club of Columbia Town Center based in Columbia, Maryland is committed to “preserving our beautiful planet.”

In the US club members are actively involved in environmental activities to include the work done in the Chesapeake Bay using oysters to clean water in the bay.  The club has created a sustainable pollinator garden and engaged Howard County High School students in hands-on environmental projects including the pollinator garden.

For the project in Haiti, the Rotary Club of Columbia Town will establish tree and grass nurseries and work with a local school and community in Haiti. The tree nursery will include forest trees and fruit trees, particularly papaya because they are fast growing. The club will assist establish pollinator gardens in Haiti. There are approx. 160–200 species of butterflies on the Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) and an incredible 60% are endemic (found nowhere else in the world, except the Hispaniola). Deforestation and habitat loss put many of these species at risk. Protecting the mountains and planting native host/nectar plants can help them thrive.

With very hands-on club members, the Rotary Club of Columbia Town has already engaged in active communication with the communities in Haiti.
