The Rotary Club of Sanibel Captiva Maintains Effort for Erosion Control In Haiti

The Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva has provided a grant of $3000 towards the Haiti Grass Project. Over the Haiti Grass Project’s seven-year lifespan, the Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva has consistently supported the project. This donation will go towards training local communities in sustainable best practices and bringing awareness to village leaders and farmers of the science and practice of raising and planting drought and heat-tolerant grasses that bring soil stabilization and ultimately reforestation to the region. Trainees will then organize and lead local erosion-control projects where other villagers assist in all phases from cultivating grass in nurseries to planting hillsides.

Christopher Weider, a Haiti Grass Project Board member expressed his appreciation for this contribution, stating, “Individual and organizational support is imperative for the Haiti Grass Project’s success and continued growth toward Haitian land sustainability.” Chester Sadler, a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva and Haitian volunteer, commends the Haiti Grass Project's approach of mitigating erosion with grass that then provides the foundation for tropical reforestation.

The Haiti Grass Project continues to seek financial backing and collaborative partners here in the US and in Haiti to build social and ecological leadership through grass restoration efforts, training, and community development projects.
